Walt Disney World is a fantastic place to see some of your favorite stories come to life, and many of the attractions are based on favorite movies and franchises. There’s definitely a lot to choose from, but here are my 5 favorite movie-inspired Walt Disney World attractions.
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom) – You can’t get more classic Disney than Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and this popular roller coaster takes you into the mines as the Seven Dwarfs head home to their cottage. The roller coaster is fairly mild with a couple of sizeable drops, and a unique ride vehicle that swings back and forth like a mine car. Perhaps my favorite part of the ride is when you slow down to take in the scene of the dwarfs working in the mine. Be sure to see if you can spot the witch at the very end of the ride!
Great Movie Ride (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – If you love movies, then this is the ride for you. You’ll find the Great Movie Ride located in the replica of the Chinese Theater. Keep an eye out for film props and costumes in the queue. This attraction takes guests right into scenes from some of Hollywood’s great films, including Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, Alien, and Casablanca. There are some parts of the attraction that can be loud and intense, so approach with caution for younger ones. It’s definitely a must-do for movie fans, though!
Star Tours: The Adventures Continue (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – There’s plenty to enjoy for Star Wars fans at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and the main attraction is Star Tours, a 3D motion simulator that takes you to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. There are multiple scenes in the attraction that rotate, so you can have a different experience each time you ride, from getting caught in the middle of a pod race to facing down Boba Fett.
Festival of the Lion King (Disney’s Animal Kingdom) – This live-action show in the Africa section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom is one of our favorite shows at Walt Disney World. Rather than a re-telling of The Lion King story, this show is inspired by the music and characters of the Lion King and gives an amazing variety-act-style performance featuring acrobatics, dancing, singing, fire twirling, and more.
Enchanted Tales with Belle (Magic Kingdom) – This elaborate meet-and-greet experience is not quite like anything else at Walt Disney World, and makes you feel like you’ve walked into the story of Beauty and the Beast. Entering Maurice’s cottage, you’ll travel through the magic mirror to the Beast’s castle and be enlisted to help re-enact the story of how Belle and the Beast met. There are some wonderful effects in this experience, and all participating children get to take a photo with Belle before the experience concludes.
Honorable Mention – Avatar: Flight of Passage (Disney’s Animal Kingdom) – This one is an honorable mention because I haven’t experienced it yet, but Flight of Passage in Pandora: The World of Avatar has had amazing feedback, and friends of mine have raved about it. Based on the popular film Pandora, this simulator ride combines screen technology and other effects to take guests flying on the back of a Banshee over the world of Pandora. This attraction has only been open for about a month, and is extremely popular – FastPass is highly recommended.
