Nerd Travel is all about living your favorite stories, and one of the best ways to do that is to meet the heroes of your favorite stories! Here are my favorite Walt Disney World character meets to bring those stories to life.
Star-Lord & Baby Groot
If you want to rock out with Star-Lord and get a photo with the adorable baby Groot, you can find them in the back of One Man’s Dream at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Peter’s brought his awesome mix with him to Terra and is ready to greet his fans and show off his blaster moves. This meet does not have much advertising and was not shown on the Times Guide when we visited earlier this year. It could also disappear at any time, so if you have the chance be sure to pay them a visit!
If you loved the comic book/anime mash-up style of Big Hero 6 and want to meet the film’s resident personal healthcare companion, you can do so at Innoventions West in Epcot. Baymax meets throughout the day and may even give you a fist bump. (We’re also big fans of the meet with Joy and Sadness from Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’ right next door).
BB-8, Kylo Ren & Chewbacca
The Star Wars Launch Bay at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the perfect place for Star Wars fans (until Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens, that is). In addition to lots of cool replica props and merchandise to check out, guests can meet some favorite Star Wars characters. The intimidating Kylo Ren will be checking to see what skills you have to offer the First Order, or you can choose the resistance and meet with Chewbacca or BB-8 (don’t worry, BB-8 has a translator if you don’t speak droid). Lines for these characters fluctuate throughout the day, though you can often find shorter waits late in the evening. You can also often find Stormtroopers patrolling the area.
Possibly one of my favorite characters to meet, and definitely a favorite for many grown-up Disney fans, is the Mad Hatter. He’s funny, quirky, and a lot of fun to interact with. Once in a great while he may greet guests with Alice when she meets near the Mad Tea Party in the Magic Kingdom, but you can find him more consistently during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in the same location, and during the character breakfast at 1900 Park Fare at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.
Jack Skellington & Sally
The Nightmare Before Christmas has long been a favorite among Disney nerds and Halloween fans, and the upcoming Halloween season is the perfect time to find more merchandise themed to the film. It’s also the one time that guests are able to meet Jack Skellington and Sally in person – but, you can only do so if you’re attending Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. These two are one of the most popular meets of the party nights, with typical wait times of two hours. When we attended the party last year we got in line well before the party started, and while we still waited a long time, we weren’t using up party time waiting – and it remains one of my favorite Walt Disney World character meets.
