Satu’li Canteen is the newest quick-service restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom located in Pandora: the World of Avatar. The story ties in with the rest of the land – the canteen is the former mess hall of the RDA (the bad guys from the film the land is based on), and is now run by the organization guests will see everywhere in the new land, Alpha Centauri Expeditions.
The restaurant is quick-service, so guests walk up to a counter to order. Satu’li Canteen was also one of the first quick-service restaurants to start using mobile ordering, which is now available at many Walt Disney World quick-service locations. Mobile ordering allows guests to place their order and pay through the My Disney Experience app. We found it to be a convenient addition, and allowed us to pick up our order shortly after we arrived at the restaurant.
Satu’li Canteen’s interior features a lot of the natural, woven grass textures that we saw a lot of throughout Pandora. There are indoor and outdoor seating areas, although indoor was much more popular as it was a hot day.
The menu seems aimed at healthier fare than what we typically see at a lot of quick-service restaurants in the theme parks. The main feature is customizable bowls where you can choose your protein (chicken, beef, fish, or tofu), base (mixed grains and rice, red and sweet potato hash, vegetable chips, or vegetable and quinoa salad), and sauce (charred onion chimichurri, black bean vinaigrette, or creamy herb dressing).
We had heard good things about the bowls, so we each went with those. I got chicken with red and sweet potato hash and the charred onion chimichurri, and my sister got chicken with the mixed grains and rice and black bean vinaigrette.
The portions are huge and filling, the chicken was cooked well, and we both liked the flavor and texture of the bases we had chosen. The sauce is provided a little on the side of the bowl, so you can mix as much in as you want. I tried the chicken and hash before I added the sauce, and they were each seasoned on their own, though the chimichurri was so flavorful that wanted it on everything. My sister said she liked the black bean vinaigrette as well.
For dessert we got the alien-looking Blueberry Cream Cheese Mousse. The texture was smooth and sweet, with a bit of tang from the blueberry and cream cheese. It tasted a bit like a cheesecake, but the texture was lighter. The blue around the outside is like a soft shell, which I enjoyed but my sister found a bit odd in texture. The passion fruit curd paired with it was fairly tart, so it helped balance out how sweet the mousse was. I’m glad we tried it, and it’s a fun dessert if you’re looking to try something new.
I would be happy to go back to Satu’li Canteen again, and it may have become my new favorite quick-service restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The food we had was delicious with big portions, and are a great option for guests looking for healthier fare.
