It’s everyone’s dream to meet their heroes – er, superheroes, right? Universal Orlando makes that easy to do with awesome attractions and characters at Marvel Super Hero Island in Islands of Adventure. There’s plenty to do for Marvel nerds and fans of heroes like Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Captain America. Here are some of my Universal Orlando Superhero Must-Dos.
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
This is undoubtedly my favorite superhero ride at Universal Orlando, taking you on an adventure with Spider-Man as he faces off against Doctor Octopus, Hobgoblin, Electro, and more. The ride is a 3D simulator that uses its visuals to make it seem as though you’re moving (or falling) much more than you actually are. If you remember the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, much of the indoor queue is themed with clips and details from that. Also, keep an eye out for Spider-Man creator Stan Lee – he has four different cameos on this ride!
Meet Your Superheroes
Universal Orlando is a fantastic place for character seekers in general, but it’s especially great for superhero fans because of the variety you can often find at Marvel Super Hero Island. Several times daily, heroes assemble to greet with guests, and will sometimes make a dramatic entrance on motorcycles. The heroes you’ll meet can vary, but you can usually find Captain America, Spider-Man, and a variety of X-Men possibly including Rogue, Storm, Cyclops, or Wolverine. At other times of day you’ll also find villains like Green Goblin and Doctor Doom roaming around.
For Spider-Man fans, he actually has a dedicated meeting area next to the Marvel Alterniverse store. It’s a neat photo op – you take the photo in front of a screen and the end result shows you and Spider-Man in front of a comic book cover-style cityscape.
The Incredible Hulk Coaster
I’ll admit that I tend to skip this one for my stomach’s sake, but roller coaster fans will adore this attraction. The newly-remodeled queue sets up the story of Dr. Banner, and the coaster takes you along for the ride in a nearly non-stop sequence of corkscrews and loops. It’s not for the faint of heart, but you will feel as if you’ve taken some gamma ray exposure when you’re done.
What would a theme park area be without a gift shop? Marvel Super Hero Island actually has a couple of my favorites – the Marvel Alterniverse Store and the Comic Book Shop. The former sells a variety of toys, souvenirs, apparel, and anything else you may need to show off your inner Marvel nerd. The Comic Book Shop (spoiler alert) sells comic books, as well as a variety of collectibles.
